Xunantunich + Cave Kayaking

The day opens at Xunantunich, where a hand-cranked ferry carries you across the Mopan River and into one of Belize's grandest ancient cities. You climb El Castillo, the great pyramid that towers over the Cayo jungle, and stand at the top where the green canopy rolls unbroken toward Guatemala. Your guide walks you through the carved friezes, the ball court and the plazas, peeling back the layers of a Maya capital that thrived here for centuries before falling silent.

Then comes the hands-on half. Instead of drifting on a tube, you take a paddle and steer your own kayak into the mouth of a limestone cave, gliding through chambers where your headlamp is the only light. You set your own pace through the cool, echoing dark, navigating around stone columns and reading the river ahead, the way the ancient Maya did when these caverns were sacred ground. It is quieter, more active, and more intimate than tubing, just you, the paddle and the underworld.
