Xunantunich + Inland Blue Hole

The day begins with a slow, scenic ride west toward the Guatemala border, where the Mopan River guards one of Belize's most striking Maya cities. You'll cross the river the old-fashioned way, on a hand-cranked cable ferry, then walk into Xunantunich beneath the canopy where monkeys roar and toucans clack overhead. Standing atop El Castillo, the second-tallest structure in all of Belize, the whole Cayo landscape unfolds beneath you in waves of green, with the friezes of ancient kings still carved into the temple walls.

After the climb, you'll trade limestone for limestone-filtered water at the Inland Blue Hole, a collapsed cavern pool tucked into the St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park. The water runs clear and startlingly cool, fed by an underground river that surfaces just long enough to fill this perfect turquoise basin before vanishing back into the rock. You'll float, swim, and let the jungle do the rest.
