About this adventure

Long before chocolate filled supermarket shelves, the Maya were drinking it bitter, spiced, and sacred, and on this trip you'll make it the same way they have for thousands of years. At a family-run cacao farm in the foothills, you'll walk among the cacao trees, crack open a ripe pod to taste the sweet white pulp around the beans, and learn how the Maya turned this fruit into a currency, a ceremony, and a drink fit for kings. Then you roll up your sleeves.

With roasted beans warm from the comal, you'll peel, then kneel to the metate, the traditional grinding stone, and work the cacao into a thick, glossy paste with your own hands. The smell alone is worth the trip. Your host shows you how to blend it with cane sugar, vanilla, and chile, then whisk a frothy cup of authentic Maya hot chocolate to sip right there in the jungle, deep and earthy and nothing like the candy bar version you know.

With cacao still on your fingers, you'll head to a nearby jungle waterfall to wash off the heat and float in the cool, clear plunge pool beneath the cascade. It's a half day that feeds every sense, the bitterness of real cacao, the roar of falling water, and the green lush of the Belize rainforest all around you.
