Jungle Saddle & Sacred Cave Tubing Adventure

Your day begins in the saddle, swaying down jungle trails in the Stann Creek foothills where the forest closes in green and humming around you. Your horse knows the way through the dappled light, past strangler figs and the calls of oropendolas overhead, while your guide points out medicinal plants the Maya have used for centuries. The pace is unhurried, the air thick with the smell of wet earth and wild ginger, and by the time you dismount your legs are pleasantly tired and your senses wide awake.

Then the world goes cool and quiet. You wade into a turquoise river, settle into an inner tube, and let the current carry you into a limestone cave the ancient Maya believed was an entrance to Xibalba, the underworld. Headlamps catch glittering stalactites and chambers where ceremonial fires once burned. The only sounds are dripping water, the soft splash of your paddle-hands, and your guide's voice echoing the stories carried down through generations.

You emerge blinking into the green afternoon, sun-warmed and quietly amazed at what you just floated through. A lunch caps the day before the easy ride back to the peninsula, your boots muddy, your camera full, and your sense of Belize a little wilder than it was this morning.
