About this adventure
Deep in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's first jaguar reserve, the rainforest hums with life. Your hike starts on a shaded trail where leafcutter ants stream across the path and the canopy rings with birdsong, your guide naming the calls and pointing out tracks in the soft earth, maybe even the broad pugmark of a jaguar that passed in the night. The reward at trail's end is a waterfall spilling into a clear pool, cool and inviting, where you can swim beneath the falling water and let the jungle wash over you.
Back on the river, you settle into a tube and let the gentle current take charge. You drift downstream beneath a green cathedral of overhanging branches, past granite boulders and pools so clear you can watch the fish below, the only soundtrack the water, the birds and your own laughter. The Cockscomb's peaks rise behind the treeline, and for a few unhurried hours the modern world feels very far away indeed.
This is the wilder side of Belize, raw rainforest, real wildlife habitat, and a river that asks nothing of you but to let go and float. It is the perfect day for nature lovers and families looking for adventure without the white-knuckle intensity, all within easy reach of the Placencia peninsula.
