About this adventure
The Maya called these caves Xibalba, the underworld, and the moment you float into the first dark mouth of the river you understand why. Lying back on your tube, headlamp cutting the blackness, you drift through a flooded limestone cathedral where stalactites hang inches overhead and the only sounds are dripping water and your own echoing voice. Sunlight pours through collapsed sinkholes in shafts of green, then vanishes again as the current carries you deeper into the mountain.
After the float, you trade the tube for solid ground and go exploring on foot. Your guide leads you off the water and into drier chambers, scrambling over stone and ducking beneath glittering formations to reach passages most visitors never see. Along the way you'll learn how the Maya used these caves for ceremonies and offerings, and why this karst landscape of Belize holds some of the most important cave systems in the Americas.
It's an unbeatable combination: the lazy, surreal drift of cave tubing followed by the adventure of real cave exploration. You'll surface into the jungle daylight muddy, grinning, and already telling the story. A hot local lunch caps a day that few places on earth can offer.
