ATM Cave Exploration

Actun Tunichil Muknal, the Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre, is widely called one of the greatest cave experiences on earth, and the journey starts before you even reach the entrance. After a jungle hike and three river crossings in the Tapir Mountain reserve, you arrive at a hourglass-shaped cave mouth and swim straight into the dark. From there it's a true adventure: wading through chest-deep water, squeezing between rock walls, and climbing over slick boulders by headlamp, deeper and deeper into the Maya underworld of Xibalba.

Then the cave opens into the Cathedral, a vast, glittering chamber where the air goes still. Here the ancient Maya carried their most sacred offerings: ceramic pots, grinding stones, and the calcified skeletal remains of sacrifice victims, including the famous Crystal Maiden, whose bones now sparkle with a thousand years of mineral crystal. Walking among these untouched artifacts, lit only by your lamp, is a profound and humbling encounter with the living past. (To protect this sacred site, cameras are not permitted inside the cave.)
